Event report || Slay festival

Hey yo guys!!! So Slay festival was on Saturday (21/01/7) and I turned up definitely. Slay festival was a networking, informative and fun event showcasing selected individuals teamed up to talk about certain key topics. There was ticket pass “Motherland moguls ” and “Oga madam pass”, difference being the price as well as access to master classes for the oga madams.

I got there by noon #late comer and luckily didn’t have issues locating the venue as “slay festival ” signs were mounted from the Railway Compound gates.

On getting to the entrance,  guests were being welcomed by traditional drummers , which was nice. Next is to show your eticket and get banded with the tag which was very swift, no long queues.

I missed the “Women in tech breakfast with MEST” talk, Next talk was “Getting paid in the media industry ” with Kemi Adetiba, Mary Njoku as speakers and Zaniab Balogun as the moderator. Basically that talk portrayed that aside having passion for a field , skills and talent is also needed. Kemi Adetiba went on to emphasize that based on her chosen field, her  production never goes as planned giving instance to a time she was on set and technical issues occurred, she had to think fast and another where production had to run from 6am -6am all smiles repeating scenes. It was passion that held her through it all.

Next talk was on “Building your brand like a boss” with Arese Ugwu #Thesmartmoneywoman and Toke Makinwa . I would just highlight some sentences and let it speak for itself.

• Living your dream and nightmare at the same time, you would need a high support system be it family or friends to get through.
• Have friends that push you to overcome your fear. “Toke says she is moved/motivated by her fears and not afraid”
• Find an important problem to solve thereby creating value.
• Be original and be yourself, for you to stand out and be noticed.
• No one is your biggest competitor.
• Find likemind people to collaborate hence you attain your value reach.
• Word of mouth doesn’t take you far.
• “Failure is a bastard while Success is a son to many fathers”

In between the talks were relax and network time, so it isn’t a back to back talk talk event. I met three old friends and made a couple of new friends mostly Instagram just two bloggers @NayaRhythm of maneattractionglobal.blogspot.com and Vanessa of www.stylebyohaha.com .

Next was “Trace naija music game show”, I walked round at this point but basically it was a competition between two teams guessing song lines. Quite fun from the sound of it .

Next  which was “BEING AN AFRICAN MAN IN THE 21st CENTURY ” with MI, Audu Maikori and Adebola Williams as speakers. This talk section was played in a Q&A settings. Here are the questions:

• Why the gender shift from men to women.
• How are men accepting the shift.  MI made a statement ” Many men are intimidated because women are achieving much hence they’re sleeping and need to men”  That statement took me to a page in The Smart Money Woman book where one of the character which was married hid her salary figure from her husband so as to not bruise his ego, Check out my review of The Smart Money Woman Book to know why it is a must read.

Next talk which was the last talk for me cause I was exhausted a bit and my attention span was on red  “FROM CONTACT TO CONTRACT” by Kabri Shagaya, Lamide Akintobi and Bukky Karbri-Whyte as speakers. What I gathered from this talk was ;

• Sometimes going the extra mile counts or rather that act brings you out. For instance you sponsor an event/program and give out cupcakes because your brand represents cupcakes , in the package pack your card can be enclosed stating your details. Keynote: Always sell your brand, not yourself.
• Adequate research of a company/ organization background to assert yourself with what the company is about and how you come in of structural importance. 
• Differentiation ie What makes your brand different,what is your brand message .
•  Clarity i.e. Be specific on the goals the brand wants to achieve.
• Network to targeted audiences. 

That was the end for me of talks for me, it was time to head home. Summary : #Slayfestival is a nice event, properly organized though they had issues of seat arrangements and shortage of seats, but I had a seat. I made new friends though it would be advisable for newbies to go in groups like a squad thing because some did and weren’t open to chatting with non familiar face.

Big ups to www.thekinkyapothecary.com , they styled a lot of people’s hair for FREE!!!. There was henna tent, free for Oga Madam pass holders and a token of one thousand naira for others, manicure bar which had the same rule as the henna tent but not the price , I didn’t ask. A lot of vendors were present ( thepillowtalk, The Home Shop by Abby, A mobile cocktail bar called Lime House, SBAccounting for entrepreneurs & startups and many more).
